Handwoven tape was a common household item in early America. Small tape looms were used to weave narrow bands of cloth for many purposes, including ties for crocks, wagon covers, grain sacks, garters, aprons, petticoats and more. Tape can also be used today as a decorative way to tie jars of preserves, packages, lanyards and straps. In this workshop you will learn about early American tape looms, see examples of tape, learn to warp a loom, and weave a band of tape to keep. All materials will be provided and no experience is necessary. Each participant will leave with a small pair of scissors and handwoven tape to loop through them!
Meet Your Instructor: Kristin Toler
After studying history at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kristin joined the staff of a small living history site. After 20 years of experience in the living history field, Kristin created Long Creek Mercantile.
