Little Learners Day at Hart Square Village

Little Learners Day is a special, hands-on learning experience designed just for children in kindergarten through second grade. During this self-guided exploration day, young visitors will step back in time and discover what life was like in 19th-century North Carolina through play, movement, and guided discovery.

Students can explore 15 interactive learning stations located throughout Hart Square Village. At each station, children will explore a different aspect of daily life in the 1800s, including traditional crafts, household chores, and early trades. Costumed educators and volunteers will lead age-appropriate activities and demonstrations that encourage curiosity, observation, and participation.

Stations will include experiences such as:

  • Exploring several log cabin homes and workplaces and learning how families lived long ago

  • Discovering how food was grown, prepared, and cooked over open fires

  • Trying hands-on activities connected to traditional crafts and trades, such as fiber arts and metal working

  • Learning how people made clothing, tools, and household items

  • Understanding how children helped their families through daily chores on the homestead

Little Learners Day is designed to support early elementary curriculum goals by introducing foundational history concepts, expanding vocabulary, and encouraging critical thinking through experiential learning. Activities are short, engaging, and developmentally appropriate, allowing children to learn through doing.

This event provides a fun, low-pressure way for young learners to build connections between the past and their own lives while exploring one of North Carolina’s most unique historic sites.

Why Hart Square Village for our field trip?

Hart Square is the nation's largest collection of historic log cabins. When students visit the Village, they are not just walking through a museum. They interact with artists and tradespeople at work and gain a deeper appreciation for the living traditions that are still an integral part of our North Carolina communities. We specialize in hands-on activities, ensuring that every child has a unique piece they have hand-crafted to take home with them.
