Natural dyes produce a wide range of rich colors. This class will cover preparing yarns, using mordants, preparing the dyes and dyeing yarn & cloth. Wool skeins will be dyed in a variety of colors. While they simmer, we'll work with indigo on both yarn and cloth. Materials fees cover dyes, mordants, yarn, cloth, and full instructions for the dyeing process. Please join us in discovering the magic of indigo and nature's dyes.
Minimum attendee age is 16 year old.
Sue Helmken - The Barefoot Weaver
Sue Helmken is a textile artist with 40 years experience in weaving, dyeing and teaching. Her journey in textiles began at ECU, and she has studied with fiber artists such as Madelyn Van der Hoogt, Alice Schlein, Barbara Cooper, Donna Sullivan, Jozef Bajus, Laura Sims, and Holly Brackmann. She also studied at the Penland School of Crafts and the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
Sue was a juried member several galleries: Gallery 209 in Savannah, GA, Fiberworks Gallery and The Potomac Fiberarts Gallery in the Torpedo Factory of Alexandria, VA, and Studio Fiberarts at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA. She worked with the staff at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History on the Hyperbolic Crocheted Coral Reef project.
She taught weaving and dyeing at Armstrong Atlantic State University and has taught workshops for The Blue Ridge Fiber Guild, The Weavers Guild of Greater Baltimore, The Piedmont Fiber Guild, Interweave Press YarnFest, Local Cloth in Asheville and private lessons at her studio in Clover, SC.

Tickets sold may be refunded prior to 10 business days from the ticketed event.
Exchanges of equal value may be made prior to 10 business days from the ticketed event. However, ticket availability for alternate dates is not guaranteed and is subject to a first-come, first-served basis.
Refunds cannot be approved after the 10 business day period.
